Kerala Tourism’s renowned Nishagandhi Dance Festival commenced amid splendor at the expansive Kanakakunnu Palace grounds.

Tourism Minister Shri P A Mohamed Riyas inaugurated the prestigious annual event and bestowed the esteemed Nishagandhi Puraskaram upon acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent and choreographer Smt Chitra Visweswaran, honoring her exceptional contributions to Indian classical dance.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Riyas emphasized the state government’s commitment to safeguarding diverse art forms and bolstering artists by hosting cultural extravaganzas like the Nishagandhi Dance Festival.

The Minister highlighted that the festival, held during Onam, offers abundant opportunities for artists representing various traditions, showcasing the state’s rich cultural tapestry.

Additionally, Shri V Sivankutty, Minister for General Education and Labour, who presided over the ceremony, underscored the festival’s significance in preserving classical art traditions and nurturing both established and emerging talents.

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, and Legal Metrology Shri G R Anil graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Distinguished guests including Shri V K Prasanth MLA, Mayor Smt Arya Rajendran, IMG Director and former chief secretary Shri K Jayakumar, KTIL Chairman Shri S K Sajeesh, and Smt Rajashree Warrier were also present.

The inaugural ceremony featured captivating performances by Regatta Dance School and a specially curated Mohiniyattam rendition titled ‘Ámba’ by Kalamandalam Major troupe.

Over the next seven days, the festival promises to enchant audiences with stellar performances by some of India’s finest classical dancers, representing diverse choreographic traditions alongside emerging talents.

Furthermore, the festival will feature enthralling Kathakali Melam performances by eminent exponents of the traditional Kerala dance-drama every evening.

Open to the public, the festival has garnered global acclaim for its celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage, offering free entry to all attendees.
