Ozone Day Celebrations Organised by CISSA; Awareness Seminar, Quiz Held

The Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), supported by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), today (Friday) organised the Ozone Day 2017 celebrations at Parassala.

The Ozone day 2017 celebrations were inaugurated by the Parassala Block Panchayat President Salooja V R, at a function held at the Bharatheeya Vidyapeedom Central School, Parassala, in Thiruvananthapuram district.  Dr C Suresh Kumar, General Secretary, CISSA, presided.

Pointing out that the Montreal Protocol is the best example of a successful international collaboration for the protection of ozone layer that protects all beings in earth, Salooja V R said that, for making it more meaningful, there should be local action. Efforts should be to couple environmental awareness to fight human diseases caused due to environmental degradation, combating poverty and preserving our food chain, she added.

The student and youth of the country, representing more than half of India’s population, should play a pro-active role in creating awareness on ozone depletion and climate change. Further, social media should be effectively used to carry forward the message of environmental conservation for a larger masses, Salooja said.

An awareness seminar with technical sessions by Dr. A. Bijukumar, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Kerala; Prof. C. P. Aravindakshan, Former Director, Sramik Vidya Peeth and Member, Science Popularisation Committee, KSCSTE; and Dr. C. K. Peethambaran, Former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University, was part of the Ozone Day celebrations.

A Quiz Competition for High School and Higher Secondary School students of Neyyattinkara Educational District was also organised. Dr A K Sivakumar, Educational Officer, WWF, Kerala, was the Quiz Master.

While the first prize for the quiz competition was bagged by Betty Mariya B.V and Anandha Padmanabhan A.S of Janardhanapuram Higher Secondary School, Ottasekaramangalam; the second prize was won by Silpa Vijayan V.S and Sooraj S.S of Little Flower HS, Anthiyoorkonam. Ananthu P.S and Arya S of Vrindavan HS, Vlathankara won the third prize. Consolation Prizes were given away to Abhijith and A.C. Aravind, Govt. HSS, Poovachal; and Alfiya R and Sinja Nair of HSS for Girls, Venganoor.
